The Cornelia Greene Chapter is committed to education, as are the National and State Societies. As such, there are many scholarships available through these groups.

All applicants must be citizens of the United States and must attend an accredited college or university in the United States. All applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR chapter. The State Chairman of DAR Scholarships will assist in locating the nearest chapter. In Missouri, contact Mrs. Janice Stevens . In addition, letters of recommendation are required from the principal, guidance counselor, and three teachers.

Awards are placed on deposit with the college or university; any unused portion shall be returned to the National Society. Awards are judged on academic excellence, commitment to field of study, and financial need. No affiliation with DAR is necessary unless specified.

The following scholarships are available through the National Society:

  • American History Scholarship: awarded to graduating high school students who will be majoring in American History. This award is intended to promote the study of our history among our finest students. Applications are first judged on the State level. Two winners from each state are sent to the Division level for judging. Two winners from each Division are sent to be judged on the National level. This is an award of $2,000 for up to four years with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal. Second place awards of $1,000 for up to four years may be given as funds are available. Deadline: February 1, to State Chairman, DAR Scholarship.
  • Enid Hall Griswold Memorial Scholarship: awarded to students entering their junior or senior year of college who are majoring in either political science, history, government, or economics. This is a one time award in the amount of $1,000. Deadline: February 15.
  • J.E.Caldwell Centennial Scholarship: awarded to outstanding students pursuing a course of graduate study in the field of historic preservation. This award has been made possible through the J.E. Caldwell & Co., official jewelers of the NSDAR, in honor of the DAR Centennial. This is a one time award in the amount of $2,000. Deadline: February 15.
  • Medical Scholarships: for each group of scholarships, it is only necessary to submit one application for consideration for all awards in the group.
    • Medical School-- Alice W. Rooke Scholarship and Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship: awarded to students who have been accepted into or who are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (not pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school. The MacGregor Scholarship only is also available to graduate students in the field of psychiatric nursing. This is an award of $5,000 annually for up to four years with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal. Deadline: April 15
    • Nursing School-- Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship, Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship: awarded to students who have completed at least one year of nursing school. This is a one time award of $500. Deadlines: February 15 and August 15. Winners may only receive one award.
    • Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship: awarded to students who have completed at least one year of nursing school. Applicants must be members, eligible for membership, or related to a member of NSDAR, CAR, or SAR. Please enclose a page showing your eligibility or relationship to a member. This is a one time award in the amount of $500. Deadlines: February 15 and August 15.
    • Occupational/Physical Therapy: awarded to students who have completed at least one year of study in an accredited school of occupational or physical therapy (including art or music therapy). This is a one time award of $500. Deadlines: February 15 and August 15.

    The following scholarships have specific eligibility requirements:

  • Lillian and Arthur Dunn Scholarship: awarded to graduating high school seniors whose mothers are current members of NSDAR (no other relationship qualifies). This is a $1,000 award for up to four years with annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal. Outstanding students may apply for up to an additional four years as needed for continuing study. Deadline: February 15.
  • Margaret Howard Hamilton Scholarship: awarded to a graduating high school senior who has been accepted in the Jones learning Center, University of the Ozarks. Applications must be requested directly through the Learning Center upon acceptance into this program for learning disabled students. This is an award of $1,000 each year for up to four years, with an annual transcript review by the National Chairman required for renewal. Awards are made in June.
The following scholarships are available from the Missouri State Society DAR:
  • The MSSDAR Scholarship
  • The Roberta Capps Scholarship: listed above as the American History Scholarship.
  • The Irene and Leeta Wagy Memorial Scholarship: awarded to a young lady pursuing a degree in Education.

All applicants for the MSSDAR scholarships must be:

  • in the upper 10 percent of the senior class of an accredited high school in Missouri
  • a citizen of the United States of America and a resident of Missouri
  • sponsored by a DAR chapter with a recommendation sent with the application
  • recommended by the Principal, guidance counselor, and three teachers

The applicant must attend an accredited college or university in Missouri. Applicants for the Roberta Capps Scholarship may attend any accredited college or university.
