Pictures will change automatically The 112th annual Missouri State Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Conference was held April 29-May 1, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Excutive Center, in Columbia, Missouri. Special guests of the conference included President General Merry T. Wright, state regents from California (Karen Jarrard), Mississippi (Janet Whittington), Nebraska (Judy Ekeler), Ohio (Sharlene Shoaf), and the National Gift Planning Chairman Kay Yarbrough. Highlights of the Conference:For those of you were unable to attend, the weather was perfect, and DAR fellowship "lit up" the Holiday Inn Executive Center with busy days, and gala evenings. Music, education, patriotism and historic preservation were evident throughout the weekend in every nook and corner, from the wonderful students and teachers who received special recognition at the Honors and Awards luncheon, to Dorothy Shull's lessons on "tatting." Accolades to all those who helped make this year's state conference a "glowing success," especially State Regent Donna Green Nash and her State Conference Chairmen, LaDonna Duncan (Co-Chairman), Donna Kellock (Co-Chairman), and Mary Beth Green (Vice Chairman Registration). This was the first year we had a Nurses Station available to offer first-aid, take blood pressure, and evaluate unexpected illness or accident. Marilyn McMillen chaired the committee with the help of Marcia Beck, Kathy Wilkinson, and other available RNs and LPNs. This was a much needed and appreciated service--but, fortunately only needed for a few minor issues this year. At the National Defense luncheon, Mr. Ross Gartman, president of "Heroes Way," introduced his project of placing markers throughout our state with the names of our fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice against terrorrism. The meeting concluded with "Taps" being played as the benediction. The President General presented certificates to chapters with 100% participation in the President General's project at the Chapter Regents Club dinner, and also was the keynote speaker on Opening Night. Voices of Missouri Chorus, and other special music filled the air throughout the weekend and the first Nash Music Scholarship was awarded to Joel Edward Gordon, who played two classical French pieces at the Saturday night banquet. Our own Rosemary Bane was the keynote speaker as she sprinkled "Star Dust" throughout the crowd. Those attending the Saturday night banquet were also brought to their feet by the patriotic music played by the 399th United States Army Band from Fort Leonard Wood, especially when they played the theme from each branch of the armed forces! For the late night crowd, there is always laughter and fun with the Saturday night "Over the Hill Gang's" entertainment--this is Missouri DAR's version of "Saturday Night Live!" This year was no exception! Pam Johnston, president and MC delighted the audience with a Ms. Missouri DAR Beauty Pageant. Visiting state regents acted as judges, and Val Schall was named Miss Congeniality; while Mary Burge tap-danced and sang, bringing the crowd to their feet, earning the title of Ms. Missouri DAR 2011! The Sunday morning Hour of Loving Remembrance touched all those in attendance as we remembered our beloved Daughters, and a flower was placed in a vase as each name was called. A special memorial tribute to our beloved Honorary State Regent Fallis Froman was given by Honorary State Regent Carole Temple Farmer. Special music provided by the Missouri State Chorus and a duet by Marsha Pearson and Pamela Davis added to this beautiful service, conducted by State Chaplain Donna Hicks Medley. Each Daughter who attended this annual event will take home their own special memories and friendships that will linger with them for a long time to come. The spirit and energy of the Missouri Daughters truly lit up the Holiday Inn Executive Center, and the glow was surely visible throughout Columbia, and the entire state of Missouri. Now it is our mission to keep it shining brightly as we take information back to our chapters, and continue to light the way for others to join this group of remarkably educated, talented and very patriotic women!
