FLAG DAY 2011 at ROSLYN HEIGHTS

State Regent Donna Nash and Missouri Daughters were glowing with excitement on Saturday, June 11, as they gathered for the annual Flag Day Picnic, which is open to the public. Many veterans, including a WWII Honor Flight participant, were honored, and Daughters came from all corners of the state to celebrate FLAG DAY--"DAR STYLE!" Members from the Children of the American Revolution, and SAR's Russell DeVenny, presented the colors prior to the patriotic program, kicking off the event, with guest speaker Major William B. Smith, Director Military Funeral Honors Program, Missouri National Guard.

Inside, State Curator Sandra Comer, and volunteer docents gave tours of our beautiful historic state headquarters, while old and new members, non-members, HODARs, children and grandchildren lined up for a good old-fashioned picnic out on the lawn, with pulled pork, barbecue beef brisket, baked beans, cole slaw, cake, lemonade, and iced tea!

The day was splendidly cool-- a reprieve from the intense heat and humidity of the past week--and, fortunately, all umbrellas remained out of sight! As you might expect, there were flags along the driveway, and lots of "red-white-and blue" apparel. Of course there was also some "bling," amidst the many smiles and laughter as everyone enjoyed the wonderful DAR fellowship.

Music filled the air as the brass band played John Phillip Sousa from the courtyard's gazebo, helping to make this a truly a memorable event!

"Catch the Glow...Missouri Daughters light the world through historic preservation, education, and patriotism!"

Scripture: "Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify their Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:16

Motto: "A Smile is God's Gentle Light."
