A Brief History ot the Hannah Cole Chapter of the DAR

The sixteenth chapter in Missouri was organized June 17, 1906, under the name of Jemima Alexander Sharpe, in honor of the Revolutionary ancestor of Jennie D. Andrews (Mrs. Charles), Regent, who served from 1906 until 1912.

The chapter began planning monthly programs with historical, educational and patriotic themes in keeping with the three main objectives of the NSDAR.  Their first projects included a Martha Washington Tea that realized thirteen dollars which was sent to Continental Hall.  They also raised $50.00 to keep a boy in the W.C.T.U. Settlement School at Hindman

During World War I, the chapter did a great deal of sewing, knitting, making surgical dressings, comfort kits and Christmas boxes for servicemen.  They also contributed to a state DAR fund to put an ambulance in the field during the war, to the Tilloloy Waterworks Fund in France and to support two French orphans after the war.

In April 1916, the chapter's name was changed to the Cooper County Chapter.  Plans were made for a Santa Fe Trail marker and a sundial to be placed on the courthouse lawn.  On Flag Day, June 14, 1921, the sundial was unveiled and dedicated.  The sundial still stands on the lawn near the southwest corner of the Cooper County Courthouse

In 1932, the name of the chapter was changed to the Hannah Cole Chapter, in honor of Hannah Cole, the first white woman to settle in Cooper County. Hannah Cole's husband was killed by Indians on the trip west, so Hannah continued the journey to Cooper County, Missouri with her nine children.  She built a fort on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. In the fall of l932 a granite boulder monument was placed at her grave located in Briscoe Cemetery, 12 miles south of Boonville on Highway 5.

As Hannah Cole Chapter prepares to celebrate 100 years of service, they continue to uphold the objectives of the NSDAR.  Recent accomplishments include a Patriots' Day Program and a Thomas Jefferson dinner to raise funds for the Hannah Cole Statue.  Members have coordinated a Veterans' Day Program for the Cooper County area, and have collaborated with three other chapters to place a marker in honor of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery near the Missouri River, and have established a scholarship for students in Cooper County.
