Welcome

The DAR, founded in 1890, and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.

As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR boasts 170,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally.  Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.

About the Chapter

The Montgomery Chapter was founded as the Watson Van Buren Chapter on March 31, 1911 in the home of Mrs H.W. Johnson.  There were thirteen original members: Mrs. H.W. Johnson, Mrs. J.E. Chadwick, Mrs. J.M. Wheeler, Mrs. I.T. Pitman, Mrs. H.C. Turner, Misses Lillian and Gertrude Barker, and Ethel and Miriam Owings.  On January 16, 1913 the chapter was granted a charter.  Mrs. Oliver, State Regent, and Mrs. Foristell, State Registrar, were present and installed the chapter officers.

While never a large chapter, the Montgomery Chapter continues to be very active.  There is a monthly article about the chapter in the Montgomery Standard.  Each year the chapter presents an American History Award to the Montgomery County R II schools and Wellsville School as well as the Good Citizenship Award to the Wellsville School.  Additionally, they have donated flags and constitution book marks to several local schools.

Chapter meetings are held the first Friday of each month beginning at 12:30 PM.
