Allene Wilson Groves President General NSDAR 1956-1959
The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR is very proud of our own Allene Wilson Groves (Mrs.
Frederic A.). Mrs. Groves was President General of NSDAR from 1956-1959. She is the only national
president from Missouri. During her tenure as President General, Mrs. Groves supervised the completion
of a 900 page inventory of the DAR museum and a 3 year lawn improvement project around the
headquarters buildings in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Groves captured headlines on several occasions for stands taken on national issues. Just two weeks
after her retirement as President General, Mrs. Groves became the first woman ever to receive the "Medal
of Appreciation" given by the Sons of the American Revolution. This prestigious honor recognized her
patriotic service and effort for national defense. Today the Sons of the American Revolution presents the
Allene Wilson Groves Award to the SAR chapter which presents the most evidence of implementing SAR
resolutions and principles.
Mrs. Groves was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in 1896. She held membership in a number of patriotic
organizations and had earned their respect for her tireless devotion to them. She held many offices in the
Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR including Regent. She passed away in 1996 at the age of 90.
Groves Cottage of Tamassee DAR School,
Tamassee, South Carolina, houses middle school age boys, and was named in honor of
Allene Wilson Groves. Groves Cottage is supported by the Missouri State Society DAR and Missouri DAR
members.
