On February 26, 1914, the Missouri
State Regent, Mrs. George B. MacFarlane of Columbia, Missouri, met with
a group of women at the home of Emma Robertson Gentry (Mrs. Overton H.,
Jr.) to organize a DAR chapter. Mrs. Gentry had been appointed the Organizing
Regent. Officers were elected and 13 members enrolled. The chapter was
chartered on November 16, 1914. Independence was the "Gateway to
the West" for early plainsmen, and, in memory of that noble band
of pioneers, the chapter was named "Independence Pioneers NSDAR."
Since its founding, chapter members manifested a deep interest in the
activities of the DAR. Throughout the years, they compiled early tombstone
records, and Jackson County marriage records to 1860. Through its generosity
and charitable contributions, the chapter has achieved many accomplishments
during its 90 years of existence. Two important accomplishments were
the starting of the Genealogical Library in 1928, and the founding and
establishment of the Jackson
County Genealogical Society in 1979. The Library is now part of the Mid-Continent
Library system, and deemed as one of the best genealogy libraries
in the nation.
