On March 2, 1910, Emma Lumpkin Green (Mrs. Samuel), outgoing Missouri State Regent, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, appointed Leonora McGregor Barbour (Mrs. Edward), local Regent, to organize a chapter of D.A.R. in Springfield, Missouri. The first meeting was held on June 21, 1910 at the home of Mrs. Barbour, 780 E. Elm Street, where Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver (Mrs. Robert) the new Missouri State Regent (and designer of the Missouri State Flag) installed Mrs. Barbour as the first Regent and where the organization of the chapter was perfect. The following 27 names, having been approved by the National Society at Washington, D.C., were entered upon the register as charter members:
Mrs. Oliver extended to Mrs. Barbour the courtesy of naming the chapter. Mrs. Barbour announced that the Springfield chapter would be called the Rachel Donelson Chapter after the wife of John Donelson (her great, great grandfather), a Colonel in the Revolutionary War and a member of the House of Burgesses. Rachel Stockley Donelson was also the mother of Rachel Donelson Robards Jackson, wife of President Andrew Jackson. Mrs. Leonora McGregor Barbour (organizing Regent), daughter of Andrew and Eudora Anderson McGregor, was born on February 16, 1868 in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. She died in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri at the age of 90 on November 11, 1958 and is buried in Maple Park Cemetery in Springfield. Today our members represent almost 170 patriot ancestors from the original 13 states. We are proud of our heritage, and continue to stress patriotic involvement in our community.
