The Rachel Donelson Chapter is committed to education, as are the National and State Societies. As such, there are many scholarships available through these groups.
All applicants must be citizens of the United States and must attend an accredited college or university in the United States. All applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR chapter. The State Chairman of DAR Scholarships will assist in locating the nearest chapter. In Missouri, contact Mrs. Elizabeth Miller. In addition, letters of recommendation are required from the principal, guidance counselor, and three teachers.
Awards are placed on deposit with the college or university; any unused portion shall be returned to the National Society. Awards are judged on academic excellence, commitment to field of study, and financial need. No affiliation with DAR is necessary unless specified.
The following scholarships are available through the National Society:
- DR. AURA-LEE A. PITTINGER AMERICAN HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP:
A scholarship in the amount of $2,000 each year for up to four consecutive years to a graduating high school senior who will have a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours in American History or American Government. This award is intended to promote the study of history among our finest students. United States citizens residing abroad may apply through a Units Overseas Chapter. American History Scholarships are first judged at the state level. Only State Winners are eligible for judging on the Division level. Division level First and Second Place Winners are judged on the National level. DEADLINE: February 1, to State Chairman, DAR Scholarship. In Missouri that is Mrs. Elizabeth Miller.- Enid Hall Griswold Memorial Scholarship: awarded to students entering their junior or senior year of college who are majoring in either political science, history, government, or economics. This is a one time award in the amount of $1,000. Deadline: February 15.
- J.E.Caldwell Centennial Scholarship: awarded to outstanding students pursuing a course of graduate study in the field of historic preservation. This award has been made possible through the J.E. Caldwell & Co., official jewelers of the NSDAR, in honor of the DAR Centennial. This is a one time award in the amount of $2,000. Deadline: February 15.
- Medical Scholarships: for each group of scholarships, it is only necessary to submit one application for consideration for all awards in the group.
- Medical School-- Alice W. Rooke Scholarship and Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship: awarded to students who have been accepted into or who are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (not pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school. The MacGregor Scholarship only is also available to students who have been accepted into or who are pursuing an approved course of study in psychiatric nursing, graduate level, at medical schools, colleges or universities. There is a preference to females "if equally qualified." These awards are in the amount of $5,000 annually for up to four years, with a maximum of $20,000 total. These awards are available only in consecutive four year increments. Deadline: April 15
- Nursing School-- Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship, Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship: A one time $500 Scholarship for students who are in financial need and have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. A letter of acceptance into the Nursing Program or the transcript stating that the applicant is enrolled in the Nursing Program must be included with the application. For the Mildred Nutting Scholarship, preference will be given to candidates from the Lowell, MA area. Deadlines: February 15 and August 15.
- Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship: A one time $500 Scholarship for students who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing, who are members of NSDAR, descendants of members of NSDAR or are eligible to be members of NSDAR, be established. A letter of acceptance into the Nursing Program or the transcript stating that the applicant is in the Nursing Program must be included with the application. DAR Member Number must be on the application.Deadlines: February 15 and August 15.
- Occupational/Physical Therapy: A one time $500 Scholarship for students who are in financial need and have been accepted or are attending an accredited school of Occupational Therapy including art, music or physical therapy. A letter of acceptance into the Occupational Therapy Program or the transcript stating the applicant is in the Occupational Therapy Program must be included with the application. Deadlines: February 15 and August 15.
The following scholarships have specific eligibility requirements:
- Lillian and Arthur Dunn Scholarship: A $2,000 Scholarship awarded for up to four years to well qualified, deserving sons and daughters of members of the NSDAR for four years of college. Outstanding recipients will be considered for an additional period of up to four years of study. DAR Member Number of mother must be on the Application.Deadline: February 15.
- Margaret Howard Hamilton Scholarship: A $1,000 Scholarship awarded for up to four years to a graduating high school senior who has been accepted into the Harvey and Bernice Jones Learning Center, housing the Ben D. Caudle Learning Program University of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Arkansas. Applications must be requested directly from the Learning Center upon acceptance into their program for learning disabled students. DEADLINE: April 15.
The following scholarships are available from the Missouri State Society DAR:
- The MSSDAR Scholarship
- The Roberta Capps Scholarship: listed above as the American History Scholarship.
- The Irene and Leeta Wagy Memorial Scholarship: awarded to a young lady pursuing a degree in Education.
All applicants for the MSSDAR scholarships must be:
- in the upper 10 percent of the senior class of an accredited high school in Missouri
- a citizen of the United States of America and a resident of Missouri
- sponsored by a DAR chapter with a recommendation sent with the application
- recommended by the Principal, guidance counselor, and three teachers
- The applicant must attend an accredited college or university in Missouri. Applicants for the Roberta Capps Scholarship may attend any accredited college or university.

The following scholarship is available from the Rachel Donelson Chapter:
- The Rachel Donelson Chapter Scholarship: an award in the amount of $500. Payment will be made directly to the college or university upon proof of enrollment. Scholarship must be used within one year of award or it is forfeited. Deadline December 1, to be sent to Mrs. Sally Napier Bueno, Rachel Donelson Scholarship Chairman.
The applicant shall be:
- A student, in the senior class of an accredited high school in southwest Missouri who is participating in JROTC and has a grade average of 3.0 or higher and has demonstrated the qualities of patriotism, leadership and love of country
- A citizen of the United States of America and a resident of southwest Missouri
- Recommended by the JROTC Unit Commander
- The applicant must attend an accredited college or university in Missouri
