March 2010

Meeting notes: The meeting was highlighted by the official visit of State Regent Lemira Parks and co-hosted by Louisiana Purchase and Captain Henry Whitener Chapters. Becky Kirkpatrick, State Conference Credentials Chairperson, and Therma Glass, Southeast District Directior were in attendance, with Virginia Wilson, Regent of Captain Henry Whitener Chapter, and Debra Dollar, Regent of Louisiana Chapter. Each chapter regent presented State Regent Parks with a gift and a donation to her state project, honoring Daniel Boone.

Ms.Parks has initiated the placing of markers in the state, honoring Daniel Boone. They will be placed near Boone’s Crossing, in St. Charles at the trailhead used by Daniel Boone, at Katy Park in Marthasville, in Matson at the crossing near the original land granted to Daniel Boone, and at Fort Osage, near trailheads used by Daniel Boone.

Ms. Parks’ mascot for her term is the honeybee. She presented an interesting program entitled “Honey Bees in American History.” The program included the history of beekeeping in America. The bees were not native to America but were brought from Europe in the 1600s. They were valued for their honey, used in cooking, and for their wax, used in candles, and were an important cash crop.

Another event during the meeting was the recognition of World War II veteran U.S. Marine Corporal Emmett Wampler, who attended with his wife Anne. Mr. Wampler received training in San Diego and later was sent to the Marshall Islands. He served as a driver for Bob Hope, Jack Benny, and Betty Hutton when they entertained the troops. He also served on Guam and Iwo Jima. The chapter presented Mr. Wampler with an American flag and a Certificate of Appreciation.

Bill and Patti talked about DNA testing that can be done through the National Geographic Genographic Society and also about testing through Ancestry.com. This testing can give a person information about where his or her family originated ten thousand years ago and show the route of emigration taken by the family. It is believed that humanity originated in Africa and moved eastward into the Middle East and Asia. Later, people moved into North America across the Alaska land bridge.
