Serving St. Louis for 114 Years
The St. Louis-Jefferson Chapter has served the St. Louis community since 1895. We are the oldest chapter in the St. Louis area and largest chapter in our area, and actively support NSDAR's mission to "promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism."
Our local activities include marking historic sites, supporting DAR scholarship programs for youth, and supporting veterans and those men and women currently serving our country.
We welcome prospective members to visit our chapter, which meets on the third Monday of the month, September through May. If you are interested in DAR membership, please contact us.
Brief Chapter History
On 5 July 2004, the St. Louis Chapter and the Jefferson Chapter merged, to become the St. Louis-Jefferson Chapter. The St. Louis Chapter was organized on 31 January 1895, by Mrs. Anna Harris O'Fallon, and the Jefferson Chapter was organized 29 November 1899, by Mrs. Mary Polk Winn. Both chapters contributed to the history of the Missouri State Society and NSDAR, and both have provided remarkable leaders who have served our community and our organization.
Real Daughters
Both the St. Louis and Jefferson Chapters were privileged to have seven Real Daughters as members. A Real Daughter is one whose father or mother was a soldier or patriot who rendered service to the American Revolution.
The Real Daughters of our chapter were:
- Eveline Paddock (Miss)
- Elizabeth Cobb Avis (Mrs. Thomas),
- Isabella Brown Tallman (Mrs. Charles),
- Catherine J. Chambers Pulliam (Mrs. John C.),
- Amanda Rector Kennedy Tillson (Mrs. Levi),
- Elizabeth Sharp Talliaferro McClelland (Mrs. Samuel), and
- Mary Birch Shawhan Dudley (Mrs. Abraham F.)
Shown below is the illustrated protrait of Elizabeth Cobb Avis (left) that was published with her obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. She is buried with her husband, Thomas Avis in Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis (right). She was born in 1809 and died in 1901.
