William White Chapter observes Lewis & Clark Journey of Discovery in Holt and Atchison counties

Since the William White Chapter covers both Holt and Atchison counties, it was felt markers should be erected in both counties. The two counties have a total of 88 miles of Missouri River frontage. Within those miles Lewis and Clark were in our area for 10 days. They had five campsites on our side of the river during that time.

Both stones are gray granite with black lettering. They are very attractive additions to our area and will be visited by tourists following the Lewis and Clark Trail during the next few years.

The marker in Holt County details much of the history relating to the expedition. That marker was in place on the courthouse lawn in time for the 50th Fall Festival of Holt County. The formal dedication was held October 6 with a program in the courthouse rotunda followed by a reception in the community hall.

Atchison County Courthouse and Lewis and Clark stone

The marker in Atchison County pertains to the Newfoundland dog, Seaman, that made the complete journey to the west coast and back. Lewis purchased this dog in Pittsburgh at the cost of twenty dollars for the explicit purpose of the journey. The Newfoundland breed is bred for water related activities. The marker in Atchison County was dedicated on October 10 with fifth- and sixth-grade students from Tarkio School presenting a musical program of numbers relating to the expedition.
